Subject: support Bill 256
Aloha County council,
I encourage you to support Bill No. 256. The funds set aside to help people whose
property lies within 1 mile of PGV plant should only be used for the intended purpose:
their safety and relocation, and to assure safety of people living near any potential
geothermal wells.
In 2004 I bought a newly completed house in Lani Puna Gardens and occupied it as my
primary residence. I found the constant noise of the PGV plant to be a serious
nuisance. Neighbors reported increased illness, which I found alarming. Rumors of
release of toxic gases due to unreported problems at the plant have been especially
worrying because our house is built in a low area that might trap the heaver-than-air
gases. The perception that Lani Puna is unhealthy has caused a neighbor's thriving
home day care service to fail as people withdrew their children. People no longer want
to rent or buy property here. Many people have been adversely affected, both by health
problems and by economic loss.
Before we bought our house, we toured the PGV plant and were reassured by the
officials of PGV that no industrial accidents had occurred, and further, that any such
releases would be quickly detected by the continuous monitoring in place. I was
alarmed when the monitoring stations were removed. When I realized that PGV has no
method of warning our neighborhood of danger and there is no evacuation plan, I lost all
trust in PGV.
We in Lani Puna Gardens are the Downwinders of Hawaii. We have no valid
information regarding hazards from the PGV plant. We have no planned evacuation
method or even a notification system letting us know to evacuate. Before any more
geothermal drilling is permitted, please take care of the safety and health of people at
risk.
