These projects are also important to the community. However, rather than pit important projects against important projects, we urge the Council to follow through on its previous commitment to see these two key community projects through and not jeopardize them by reducing their funding at a time that the estimated costs may change and alternative sources are still speculative. The Council has an obligation to protect the County's health, safety, welfare and morals. The Kapiolani Street Extension and Kalanianaole Sewer Projects are important to our community because they bring jobs, improve health and the environment, improve safety and have a positive multiplier effect by making future expansion of the University of Hawaii at Hilo more likely. The Chamber therefore opposes passage of this bill. We encourage the Council to find alternative funding sources for the proposed improvements to Parks&Recreation department facilities.
