Subject: Gmo labeling initiative in HSAC 11-339 Support
Dear Council Members,
As you may be aware, Kauai and Maui counties have voted in favor of the HSAC resolution INCLUDING the
labeling initiative for GM foods. I urge you to unite with your sister islands and do the same. Whatever their
concerns on this issue they were resolved in a timely fashion and they did NOT DELAY, but rather recognized
that this is a matter that is very pertinent and must be acknowledged NOW.
Kauai Council Member, Tim Bynum spoke about the issue being one of consumer choice. And he also pointed
out that(paraphrasing) consumers are demanding more foods be labeled. The costs of these things are not
obstructing any companies from supplying a demand. That is how business is run. There is a demand for labeling,
so now there is more labels. It should not be different here.
These foods have a name let us see them on the label. These foods are different. The federal government has
failed to acknowledge that there is profound difference between GE foods and those that are naturally bred, or
cross-bred. But there the difference is admitted by the GE industry itself, by giving them a name (BT corn for
example), and therefore should be labeled a such. The safety of these products is not an issue before you. This is
not a ban but a simple human rights issue. The right to know how the foods we are serving our families was
produced.
The State of Hawaii has the opportunity to stand up for democracy. I believe in the constitution. Do you? I know
you do! Please send that message of support for democracy by including the GMO labeling initiative in the HSAC
packet and vote yes. Thank you!
