Dear Mayor and County Council members;
I support the labeling of Genetically Modified Foods in Hawai'i!
I believe that it is crucial for the state of Hawaii to pass this labeling law so that we as consumers
can make "informed" choices about what foods we chose to purchase.
In a "free" country it is our right to know what is in our foods we consume. Labeling of our foods
that contain Genetically Modified Organisms is imperative to maintaining that right.
I want to know what is in the food I eat, I have worked very diligently in my life to choose to eat
healthy foods and stay as healthy as possible. As a 65-year-old woman I have only needed to use
my healthcare a handful of times in my life saving insurances companies countless amounts of
money. I choose to be an active participant in maintaining my health and I want to know what is in
the foods I purchase so I can make "informed" choices consistent with my life philosophy.
What is the problem with demanding the labeling of foods that contain GMO's? If these foods are
"safe" as the industry contends, then why is there a problem with labeling them? Many other
countries have labeling laws, why not Hawaii?
To assume foods containing GMO's are safe is ridiculous, it took 20 years to prove that 2nd hand
smoke is hazardous to our health and with Genetically Modified Organisms there have been no
long term studies in labs, without labeling there can be no long term studies on the populace. The
fact that the industry states that they have "seen no problems so far" and therefore concludes that
foods containing Genetically Modified Organisms is safe for consumption is a shortsighted
answer. Genetic Modification is a method that even within the same crop type can produce a wide
range of results, every genetic modification even within a single crop type is a unique creation with
a unique set of unknown potential hazards. I do not want to take these type of risks in my life, I
want to know what is in the foods I eat and make my own informed choices!
Please Support the labeling of our foods.
