Aloha Hawaii County Council,
I'm writing this to voice my support for Bill 17, Draft 2: Plastic Bag Reduction.Pictures speak louder than anything I could put
into writing to convey my message. Attached are a couple of images.The first is an image I captured while at the Maui
dump several years ago.
As you know,the accumulation of plastic trash is of increasing concern throughout the world. The Plastic Bag Reduction bill
will be a step in the right direction for the needed change to help reduce the accumulation of single-use disposable plastics.
Plastics bags kill and injure wildlife, including endangered and protected species,and easily break into persistent fragments,
resulting in devastating consequences to the environment at large.
The second picture was taken while at a beach cleanup at at Kamilo Beach, South Point. This image demonstrates the
persisting and fragmenting qualities of plastic,causing an overwhelming blight to our islands and environment as a whole.
As it stands,the current litter laws are too weak to prevent the damage we are seeing.Part of the solution lies with tackling
the problem at the roots. That being consumer use.The switch to reusable bags is a lifestyle change that is well worth the
benefits to our island's health the legacy we will leave behind.
I urge you to vote"yes"on this bill.
