As a resident of the island, I am alarmed at the number of"disposable" plastic bags I see on island streets, beaches and waters. I know that these bags kill and injure wildlife, including endangered and protected species, and easily disintegrate into persistent fragments that have potentially grave consequences for human health and the environment. Existing litter laws are not preventing these impacts; more needs to be done. The convenience of plastic bags, used on average for a few minutes, is not worth the risk to our island's health for decades to come. I urge you to vote "yes"on this bill. Re-using plastic bags, along with reusable shopping bags will offer easy alternatives to the abundance of plastic bags handed out each day. Other cities and islands have had success banning plastic bags, and I think Hawaii would too. As an island in the middle of the Pacific, we have extra interest in the condition of our ocean waters. They fastest way to make a difference in the large amount of plastic in the ocean is to start preventing it from leaving land. I urge you to vote"yes" on this bill. Thank You, Caree Weisz 9c c -) -- c GD w-; 7 N Comm. . (o •Z 0 Ref. To: _ Ref. Date at:C 9; 1 2011 12/15/2011
