Re: C- 778 /Res. 256 -00
Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Resolution No. 256 -00, transmitted by Mayor
Stephen K. Yamashiro per Communication No. 778 dated May 1, 2000, regarding the naming of streets
in the County of Hawaii, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 256 -00 authorizes the approval of street names within Honomu Village, Honomu, South
Hilo, Hawaii.
The Planning Commission at its April 20, 2000 meeting, approved the name for the roadways as follows:
"Old Mamalahoa Highway" commonly used name for the highway which circled the
island
" Honomu Road" after the land division and Village
"`Akaka Falls Road" after `Akaka Falls
"Stable Camp Road" historically used name by the residents
Pursuant to Section 22 -35, Article 2, Chapter 22, Hawaii County Code, the Council of the County of
Hawaii is authorized to adopt the street names of unnamed roadways in the County of Hawaii.
Committee Member Curtis Tyler questioned the use of the name "Old Mamalahoa Highway" as
compared to "Hawai`i Belt Road ", but Committee Member Dominic Yagong stated that the name is still
being used in certain parts of Honomu.
Your Committee concurs with the Planning Commission and the Planning Director for recommending a
favorable consideration for the street names.
Your Committee on Planning concurs with the intent and purpose of Resolution No. 256 -00, and
recommends its adoption.
