HomeMy WebLinkAboutREP PC 098 06/01/2000 1998-2000REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON PLANNING DATE: June 1, 2000 PLACE: Councilroom TIME: 1:45 p.m. Chair and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Re: C- 778 /Res. 256 -00 Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Resolution No. 256 -00, transmitted by Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro per Communication No. 778 dated May 1, 2000, regarding the naming of streets in the County of Hawaii, reports as follows: Resolution No. 256 -00 authorizes the approval of street names within Honomu Village, Honomu, South Hilo, Hawaii. The Planning Commission at its April 20, 2000 meeting, approved the name for the roadways as follows: "Old Mamalahoa Highway" commonly used name for the highway which circled the island " Honomu Road" after the land division and Village "`Akaka Falls Road" after `Akaka Falls "Stable Camp Road" historically used name by the residents Pursuant to Section 22 -35, Article 2, Chapter 22, Hawaii County Code, the Council of the County of Hawaii is authorized to adopt the street names of unnamed roadways in the County of Hawaii. Committee Member Curtis Tyler questioned the use of the name "Old Mamalahoa Highway" as compared to "Hawai`i Belt Road ", but Committee Member Dominic Yagong stated that the name is still being used in certain parts of Honomu. Your Committee concurs with the Planning Commission and the Planning Director for recommending a favorable consideration for the street names. Your Committee on Planning concurs with the intent and purpose of Resolution No. 256 -00, and recommends its adoption.
