REPORT OF THE
COMMITTEE ON PLANNING
DATE: July 18, 2012 Re: Comm. No. 766
PLACE: Council Chambers
Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i
TIME: 11:15 a.m.
Council Chair and Members
Hawaii County Council
Hilo, Hawai`i 96720
Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Comm. No. 766, reports as follows:
Communication No. 766 from Mayor Billy Kenoi, dated June 15, 2012, nominates
George "Keoki" Schattauer to a four-year term on the Kona Community Development Plan Action
Committee (KCDPAC). Mr. Schattauer resides in South Kona with his wife and family and is a
member of the Paris family who settled in South Kona in the mid-1800's. He is a graduate of
Konawaena High School, and has been involved with coffee and other agriculture activities. Mr.
Schattauer received an associates degree in auto body painting and has two years of schooling in
small business management. He currently works in property management for his family's
business, Schattauer Family Properties. Mr. Schattauer's family historic ties to Kona will offer
great insight to the Action Committee.
Nominee George "Keoki" Schattauer was present at the West Hawai`i Civic Center and stated that
he was born and raised in Kailua-Kona and is excited to be part of the committee to help "smart"
plan Kailua-Kona.
Committee Member Ford confirmed that Mr. Schattauer was not involved in the design of the
Kona Community Development Plan(KCDP).
Committee Member Pilago asked the nominee why he would apply and how he would contribute if
he didn't know what the KCDP was.
Mr. Schattauer stated that he wanted to be part of the idea creation and the decision-making that
would help to keep the KCDP moving forward.
Committee Member Yoshimoto suggested the Council Members read the nominee's comments in
the written application to further their understanding of the nominee.
Committee Member Yagong clarified that Mr. Schattauer was from a farming/agricultural
background and stated that the committee would benefit from that perspective.
PC Rept. No.: 58
