SUBJECT: HAWAII COUNTY CODE AMENDMENT RELATING TO ANIMAL
ERADICATION
The following is a letter voicing support for Council Chairman Dominic Yagong's proposed
amendment to Chapter 14 of the Hawaii County Code.
I feel that it is ridiculous to think that the use of helicopters to exterminate a species of animal
could possibly be the solution to a problem. The practice of aerial shooting and eradication does
not lend it's self to being able to fully maximize the utilization of meat from the animals killed.
This is not to mention the disturbance to the land and plants caused by the necessity of low flying
aircraft in this means of animal eradication.
In these hard times where we could all use a little help, those who rely on subsistence hunting to
supplement the food on their family's table have surely suffered. On this beautiful Island of
Hawaii, where so many cultures, views and lifestyles converge, we have always known
compromise, understanding and that there are different means to the same end. While it may be
necessary to control the population of certain ungulate species in certain areas, couldn't this be
done in other ways? Perhaps one that might take into account and also appease all parties
involved.
Although State and Federal law may supersede our County Code, it is important to send a
message that we the people of Hawaii Island do not feel that this is right. Further, the use of
helicopters to herd and shoot animals from the air, or to make them run until they are exhausted
for the purpose of making them easier to shoot is not only morally wrong and inhumane, but it
should be illegal as well. 131 . 7

In conclusion, I humbly ask you to support Chairman Yagong's proposed amendment. Not only for
myself but for future generations to come.
