Subject: Primary Election
This is regarding the experience I had voting at the Kalanianaole School, Papaikou, in the
Primary election. In spite of a sign that stated I needed to show I.D, I was not asked for proof of
identifcation. When given my ballot I was not reminded to check the box and vote for only one
party. When the voting machine returned my ballot the poll workers could clearly see who I had
voted for. They allowed me to take my ballot back into the voting booth and check off my party
affiliation and then re-inserted the ballot.
After this experience I was concerned enough to review the very simple laws regarding
registration and voting in the state of Hawaii and realized then that my vote was invalid. i
wonder how many other invalid votes were cast. The lax atmosphere at this polling place was
striking and not at all what I have experienced in past elections.
Here are the very clearly laid out rules of procedure for elections in the State of Hawaii. I hope
that everyone who runs elections in the future will read and understand them. These should be
widely publicized, too, to make sure that voters are well informed and not confused about
registration and voting rules.
