I am Joy Keahipuakauikawekiu Mills. 75-6081 Alii Dr. F201 Kailua Kona Hawaii.
I am of Hawaiian decent& I would like to write in support Resolution 27612
which asks that Hawai'i County acquire 'O'oma so that it may be protected
FOREVER as natural, public, open space.
I am working on Wednesday July 18& can not attend the hearing to voice my
concern. So I am writing this as I believe it is important for our future to keep as much
open space as we can especially areas dose to our coastline. We can no longer turn a
blinds eye to the fact that building on our coast has damaged a lot of our ocean
environment. We need to learn from past errors on such developments and stand
strong to keep areas such as O'oma as open space. In this economy when visitors are
looking for "untouched"& "eco-friendly"destinations, Our Hawaiian Coastline pure and
simple is what should be focused on. Keeping access for cultural and recreation is
important.
I would like to reprint the following reasons as I believe these are important points.
• Kona's increasing population will require increased availability and access to natural, open, coastal space. 'O'oma
is perfectly situated to help fill that need into the future.
• With burgeoning up slope development, 'O'oma will provide a significant environmental buffer to help protect the
region's near shore waters, including those of nearby Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park.
• The value of natural, open space cannot be quantified, but its associated cultural, environmental, social,
recreational and spiritual value helps provide balance to our island communities—a value which is greater than g r .
• Even the landowners'website acknowledges that'O'oma is the region's last open, natural, coastal space—the"
best reason to help protect it from private, speculative development.
