Subject: Support Resolution 276 12 I!!
Sirs:
Please support the subject resolution to acquire the O'oma parcel for public use. Having served 21 years
(1982-2003) as Technical Director of the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority, which neighbors
the property which is the subject of this resolution, I am intimately aware of its value to the public and of
the multitudinous ill-conceived proposals for its commercial development.
As has been noted many times, the cultural sensitivity of the parcel, its proximity to NELHA and,
especially, its proximity to the Kona International Airport at Keahole make it unsuitable for any of the
proposed commercial uses-and eminently appropriate for acquisition to ensure continued public access
and use. The community and various government/regulatory entities (LUC, DLNR, County Planning, etc.)
have consistently denied these ill-advised commercial uses, implicitly (and occasionally
explicity) recognizing the necessity of protection and eventual acquisition of this land for public use.
The burgeoning upslope development of North Kona and the requirements of neighboring NELHA and
Kaloko Honokohau National Historic Park for pristine nearshore waters further mandate the acquisition
and careful management of this parcel to buffer against the potential devasting effects of human
development on the coastal waters.
The fact that the subject property is the last open, natural coastal space along the Kona coast(as
acknowledged on the owner's website!), makes its immediate acquisition for public use essential to the
preservation of our environment and our Hawaiian lifestyle.
I fervently request that you act now to acquire this important property for the use of the people of Hawaii.
