Subject: Please DO NOT VOTE TO OVERRIDE Mayor Kenoi's veto of Bill 256
We are property owners directly affected by Bill 256 as we apparently live within the area that would
affected. I say apparently because no one has produced any kind of an official account that defines the,
area affected or specified the properties that will be affected. One mile from where? The perimeter of
Puna Geothermal Ventures? Some central point? The actual wells? One mile to where? The edge of
piece of property? A point within the property? Does the whole property have to be within the one 2.
mile so-called buffer zone?
And what are we to do if we like living where we are and love our community? How can we expect to
continue to live here if somehow the County of Hawai`i finds sufficient funds to purchase the house next
door that is closer to the Geothermal plant? What will the county do with that property? What will
happen when squatters move in and use generators to keep the house going? What if all these houses
in our neighborhood become ice houses? We do not have sufficient police to police lower Puna now as
it is. Where will the county find the money to hire people to police the area?
These are just some of the many questions that were not considered as the County Council voted to
approve Bill 256. I am sure that if the council members were to read all of the correspondence that they
have received, they will become aware of many more.
Beyond that, consider the many, many people whose lives will be adversely affected by Bill 256. Those
affected are not only those within the (undefined) one mile distance from Puna Geothermal, but those
just outside that distance. In our community of Leilani Estates, EVERYONE will be affected because our
properties will no longer generate revenue to keep the community's common areas up. And we're just
one community affected.
I understand that there are people who have said that their health has been affected by the
Geothermal. I also understand that people have a need to blame illnesses on something. But I have
read of no scientific evidence to connect the Geothermal with any illnesses. The County Council chose
to pass Bill 256 originally before a scheduled hearing to get some facts. Pass the bill and then get the
facts? This is absurd!
I understand that there are those who are worried about a "blow out," including a woman who said she
feels as if she is living on a time bomb. Yes, she is—she is living on the flank of an active volcano, and
she chose to live there. Will the Council provide a one mile buffer zone around Kilauea and Mauna Loa?
People have said they are affected by particles (unnamed) in the air. What about the particles in
Kilauea's vog? Will you buy out the property of everyone who lives within the range of the vog?
Please pay attention to the voices of reason and UPHOLD the veto of Bill 256.
