I have a background in Emergency medicine, search and rescue dogs 1 d am an active member of Leilani Cert Team. 1 live in Leilani Estates an, therefore, fairly close to the Geothermal plant. Other than cancer, which m, husband developed on the mainland, we both remain healthy. As far as I. ow, we have not `caught' any thing from the geothermal plant. 1 have attended all but one of the county coup 'l meetings related to these two bills. I have heard numerous claims from itizens living in the Puna district; some living closer to the plant than I d some not as close. Many who do not live in the Puna district at all. We have been told that all of their physical co plaints are the result of geothermal emissions. We have not been offer d any PROOF that these physical maladies are a result of geothermal. e are expected to take all these claims at face value without any scientifi studies to support the claims. Geothermal energy is accepted everywhere in a world as clean and affordable. Everywhere that is, except Hawaii Other Geothermal plants do not have buffer zones. Why do we need a bu" -r zone? We will create abandoned homes which support illegal activi es and run down neighborhoods which are eyesores to the co unity. It will reduce property values in the our county and thus reduce the base. Our local geothermal had a blowout in 1991, (+ver 20 years ago). Since then improved technology and knowledge hav allowed successful wells to be drilled without mishap. There is no reason o believe that this successful drilling will not continue. It is totally unneces.. and irresponsible to change the geothermal Community Benefits 'gram to the Relocation and Public Safety Program. Please support the vet I of Bill 256 as the responsible action to take. 1Comm. N• • t 0.1 I Ref.To: I Ref. Date -18-2812 09:32 FROM:PARADISE BUSINESSCTR 18089652122 T0:9618912 P.2'2 As for Bill 257,the Hawaii County Civil Def nse Agency already has evacuation plans in place that would cover ev uation of the area surrounding PGV in the event of a geothermal emergency. When it comes to possible emergencies, the geothermal plant hould be the last thing we worry about. Emergencies much more likely t impact us are tsunamis, brush/forest fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, an lava inundations. All either of these bills will do is to increase h meowners insurance by designating the area in which we live as a 'big ly dangerous environmental hazard zone' in need of special evacuation pl s that go above and beyond those of the Hawaii County Civil Defense Age cy, (which is appropriate only for other less dangerous areas). There ar no hard scientific facts to support that premise. May T close by begging that sane minds prevai . That unless or until the claims of negative health issues caused by geothermal can be substantiated, the County Council support Mayor Billy Keno 's veto of Bills 256 and 257.
