A RESOLUTION URGING THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION TO APPROVE THE APPLICATION OF HAWAIIAN AIRLINES
FOR ALLOCATION OF A NONSTOP ROUTE BETWEEN HANEDA, JAPAN AND
KONA, HAWAII.
WHEREAS, four major airlines have filed an application with the United States
Department of Transportation asking the Federal Government for permission to offer a nonstop
route originating at Tokyo's Haneda Airport to four different points in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Hawaiian Airlines, the largest airline in the State of Hawai`i, has applied
for a nonstop route between Haneda and the Kona International Airport; and
WHEREAS, Kona has more visitors who originate from Japan than the 12 existing
markets that provide nonstop service to Tokyo, and has been without direct service from Japan
since November 2010; and
WHEREAS, Tokyo is Kona's largest international origin market, and Kona is the second
largest destination market without nonstop service from Tokyo; and
WHEREAS, Hawaiian Airlines' extensive neighbor island routes provide frequent
connections to other islands within the archipelago, which creates expansion opportunities to
other Hawai`i destinations; and
WHEREAS, Hawaiian Airlines' A330-200 aircraft, with 294 seats, offers more capacity
than the other three airlines applying to the U.S. Department of Transportation for allocation of a
nonstop route originating at Haneda; and
WHEREAS,there is an established demand for a nonstop service route between Haneda
and Kona that will have positive economic impacts on Hawai`i Island, create an opportunity to
restore lost service to Japan, and increase the potential for corresponding positive impacts to the
State of Hawai`i and the U.S. economy; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII, that the
United States Department of Transportation is urged to approve the application of Hawaiian
