Councilors,
The will of the majority of concerned citizens and the will of the majority of the council have
already been expressed on this issue. As I understand it, the presence of the geothermal facility
in the midst of a residential neighborhood has a long history of public health concerns, accidents,
and near-momentous catastrophes.
Currently, PGV is having a tougher time finding and maintaining resource with sufficient
temperatures for more than a year or two without needing-to drill again. The writing is on the
wall for geothermal energy, and so it is appropriate to begin a judicious withdrawal and retreat
from the energy source. This the County can first rightly do by acknowledging the potential for
a catastrophic emergency and doing everything in its power to be prepared for such.
The evacuation and emergency response plan that the mayor touts has not been implemented
according to proper FEMA procedures, so the mayor's reason for disapproval is disingenuous.
Also, County movement and support towards solar and away from geothermal is in the best
interest of taxpayers and policy-makers. Let's get on with our renewable energy future without
continuing to dabble in such expensive-to-maintain, dangerous technologies as geothermal wells.
