Corp state program, Planning C9mmittee, introducer: Ford c^o Dear council members, I support the resolution 303-12 introduced by Brenda Ford. Geothermal development in populated areas is potentially toxic and dangerous in many ways, including leaks of toxic gasses, potentially creating earthquakes in an unstable area, contamination of groundwater and oceans, creation and storage of toxic waste, and the potential for accidents that require massive evacuations. Even one accident will create an evacuation area consisting of a 7 mile radius. This will effectively shut down all of Puna. In an area which is prone to both earthquakes and lava flow, it's clear that these things must be studied in detail before moving forward with any such project. An EIS must be required in every project related to developing geothermal power. Public input must be required before approving projects. The Public Land Development Corporation needs to be abolished, as it is deeply flawed in its conception and execution of its actions, and is likely to meet many legal challenges.
