Corp state program, Planning Committee,
Introducer: Ford
Dear County Council Members,
I support the resolution 303-12 introduced by Brenda Ford.
Every geothermal development needs to have an EIS,as well as a complete economic analysis.
I too have been concerned about energy supply issues, but the more I have looked into the different types of
geothermal development, the more I understand the potential for disaster in drilling geothermal wells,
particularly in a Lava Zone 1 or 2. The toxicity of emissions, the contamination of toxic wastes, and fouling
of air and ocean make the potential for degrading our environment a real hazard. The potential for accidents is
ever-present,and in other places in the world, massive land subsidence and swarms of earthquakes have been
the result of geothermal drilling. In some cases, geothermal plants have been shut down and abandoned.
We need to understand if this course makes sense before such a costly investment is made.
The Public Land Development Corporation needs to be abolished.Any execution of its potential actions at
this time will only create a tangle of legal issues that will be very costly to litigate. The community is deeply
opposed to geothermal because of the history of the PGV well in Puna, and since their property values are ;
likely to suffer, they will be quite likely to seek compensation from the state and county. e-?
Aloha pumehana,
Beth McCormick
The Permaculture Foundation of Hawaii
Comm.
