The Honorable Dominic Yagong
Council Chair & Presiding Officer
Hawai'i County Council
Dear Mr. Yagong:
This letter is written in support of Bill 178 which proposes to change the zoning
for a parcel of land in Hilo, TMK 2-2-03:017 to allow for a multi-family residential
to be use for student housing.
The University of Hawai'i at Hilo has experienced a severe shortage of housing
for its students for many years. It is common to have a Fall wait list of 300
students wanting on-campus housing. While some of these students find
housing in the community, many probably end up not attending UH Hilo due to a
lack of housing that is close to our campus.
While we are currently building a residential complex that will accommodate 300
students on-campus, other housing options are necessary to meet the individual
needs and wants of our diverse student population. While many students and
parents opt for on-campus housing, many prefer to live in off-campus housing.
The proposed apartment complex will help fill a need that we cannot fulfill.
Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Miles K. Nagata
