Dear Council Members, I live in Leilani Estates, am a teacher retired, and a widow. I have seen the Puna
district grow sincethe late 70's. My husband and I came to Hawaii every chance we got from Alaska, and
loved the Pohoa area, but noticed how awful it was when we took our rubbish to be disposed at at the
Pahoa Transfer Station. Trash was all over the roads, in the jungle, from washing machines, to old
fridges, stoves, and in general just garbage in bags, etc. The wonderful improvement to our area was the
finally getting a decent and actually beautiful dump and recycle station for anything and everything you
could think of that one might want to trash.
Our tax dollars at work the sign said. So now Mrs Smart introduced a bill that if passed would surely
return our roads and bushes and lovely fauna along our way to the Transfer station into the jungle of trash
we use to see. Please do not pass a bill imposing a fee to dump our trash. Our tax dollars should be
healthy enough to support that facility. We have progressed, and do not to once again regress back to the
past.
