Subject: Bill 306--Vote No!
I never before lived in a place where I did not have a city or county garbage hauling service--
until I moved to the Big Island in January 2000. Since then, I have been hauling my own garbage
to county transfer points. I can see where this is a huge savings to Hawaii County as even if a
paid service was available, I'm sure the cost would be prohibitive.
That said, we citizens who haul our trash at our expense should not have to pay a "tipping fee"--
or any other fee for transporting our trash to the transfer point. I shudder to think what those
points--or our roads--would look like once such fees are imposed and people go to great lengths
to avoid them by tossing their garbage wherever they can under cover of darkness or in areas far
from prying eyes. The costs to clean up such messes would far exceed anything the county might
make from tipping or other drop-off fees.
