Letter in Objection to Bill No. 256, Draft 2
My name is Denise Fleming and I am a resident of Kapoho and until 2007 since
1996 lived in Lanipuna Gardens. I have lived here in Lower Puna for over thirty
years. I am now retired and on disability. My partner and I worked and saved and
have lived together for 25 years to finally own our dream home free and clear. It has
not been easy, but it has resulted in our realization of our lives goals which is one of
life's greatest rewards.
I am very concerned about the proposed amendment to the Geothermal Relocation
and Community Benefits Program.
I ask that you please listen to the long-time residents of the community and vote
against Bill 256, Draft 2. The financial impact to Puna homeowners will be
devastating. Property values will be negatively impacted. We have a hard time
getting homeowners insurance now, and if this bill passes, we won't be able to
get insurance at all. For many of us,especially the retirees, that is a financial crisis
we cannot afford.
There has been no proof that the geothermal plant has impacted our lifestyles or our
health, and until you can prove otherwise, we don't want to move, lose our
insurance, or have you devalue our homes.
We are voters and responsible residents of the County of Hawaii, and feel very
betrayed that our County Council members would even consider a bill like this that
has such a huge impact on the Puna District.
Please vote against Bill No. 256, Draft 2.
