Date UN 1 9 2012 6/18/2012 Roberta Messenheimer 13-3366 Kaupili Street Leilani Estates,Hawaii 96778 June 15, 2012 Letter in Objection to Bill No. 256, Draft 2 My name is Roberta Messenheimer and I am a resident of 13-3366 Kaupili Street in Leilani Estates, within a 1-mile radius of the Puna Geothermal Plant. I have lived here for over five years and disagree with the proposed amendment to the Geothermal Relocation and Community Benefits Program. We did not know from any source that the geothermal plant was there when we moved here. However, we found that out shortly after we moved in, and could ascertain no adverse effects from living where we do except for noise when there is drilling. We understand that there could be some danger if there is a blow-out, but we are equally understanding that there is also a Volcano nearby, and there can also be danger if that blows out. We love our home and the land on which it sits. Why take our choice to continue to live in this area away from us by making it economically impossible for us to do that? If this bill passes, the financial impact on us will be devastating. The value of our property will be severely negatively impacted, far more than has happened because of the current economic situation. There is even the distinct possibility that we will lose our insurance coverage, depending upon how insurance companies view this irresponsible behavior of our County Council. As retirees this whole scenario would present a financial crisis we cannot afford. I have read of no proof that the geothermal plant has impacted our lifestyles or our health. Yes, there are claims that every ailment that has befallen certain people is caused by the Geothermal Plant. But they are common ailments of mankind, and people who do not live near Geothermal Plants have the same ones. Where is the scientific study that links the Geothermal presence to these ailments? Until science can prove otherwise, we do not want to move or have you devalue our homes. We are voters (we have voted in every election since we have been here) and responsible residents of the County of Hawai`i. We feel betrayed that our County Council members would even consider a bill like this that has such a huge impact not only on us personally, but on the Puna District which we call home.
