Chairman Yegong, County Council Members, fellow citizens- My name is
Karolyn Lundkvist. I live in Leilani Estates approximately two miles from
the geothermal plant. I have lived in this residence for sixteen years. During
those sixteen years, I have been healthy and active and never suffered
negative effects from geothermal emissions. -
It is my understanding that the council passed two bills, 256, and 257. Bills-
the mayor later vetoed. The first bill would change the Community Benefits --:
Program to the Relocation and Public Safety Program. The Community
Benefits Program has already proven beneficial to our community by
providing services that the county would not other wise have been able to
afford in Puna. It has benefited many. If you change that fund to a
Relocation and Public Safety Program, it would take away services from the
many to benefit the few.
If the health issues of the people who would benefit from relocation could
be proven to result from geothermal issues, that would be one thing. There
have been no independent health studies to show that is the case.
In relocating families within the proposed one mile buffer zone, the county
will be acquiring un-marketable properties. Properties that will negatively
impact other families who are located nearby. These abandoned homes will
become targets for drug dealers and other illegal activities. The abandoned
properties will further depress a neighborhood deemed undesirable by the
action of the county council. It will certainly negatively impact the value of
my property.
As for a new evacuation plan, the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency
already has a plan in place. Why do we want to spend out of our limited
funds to replace an evacuation plan that is already in place?
Please uphold the mayors veto of these two bills as the responsible action to
take.
