My testimony is in support of Mayor Kenoi's veto of bills 256, Draft 2 and
257.
My name is Mar lynRenken. My husband and I have lived approximately '
2 miles from the Geothermal plant for the past three years. We live in
Leilani Estates. We and our three dogs have suffered no ill effects from the_
geothermal plant. We all remain healthy and active.

Our son and his family live in the outskirts of Reno, NV. Fairly close to cD

another Geothermal plant. They and their animals also remain healthy. I
asked my son how his neighbors felt about their geothermal plant and he
told me they love it. It provides clean, cheap energy. They wish they would
build another.
I am a Masters prepared Family Nurse Practitioner, employed here in the
state of Hawaii. I am a member of the Leilani CERT team with an extensive
background in emergency medicine. If I thought even for an instant, that
my friends and neighbors were in danger from geothermal emissions, I
would fight hard to protect them. That is my job. I was taught, during my
training, that in order to assign blame, you must gather data, you must have
scientific proof, you must have retrospective studies.
You, the county council have passed a fiscally irresponsible bill. A bill
destined to ruin the financial, social, and emotional security of many Puna
citizens. You've done this based solely on hysterical claims and innuendo,
and without one iota of proof Without one independent study.
Mayor Kenoi, in his wisdom, has seen fit to veto both these bills. I would
hope you would investigate these health related claims for their authenticity.
If an independent study can be done to prove that geothermal emissions are
injurious to our health, you can always go back and regenerate these bills.
Then you would be standing on solid defendable ground.
As for the evacuation plan, we already have one. Why spend county funds
to reinvent the wheel? There are so many other issues those funds could be
used for.
