Aloha Counsel Members,
My husband and I bought property and built our home here in
Leilani Estates in 2006. We have been full time residents since our
arrival Oct. 31, 2006. We love our home at 13-3357 Hookupu
street. When the economic downturn occurred we pursued a state
permit to open a one room Bed and Breakfast. It has been a great
success, we have maintained#1 on TripAdvisor for 3 months now.
We are so proud since opening a business is not why we moved to
the Big Island, but we love it and feel good that we contribute to
the economic growth to the Pahoa area by providing
accommodations to visiting tourists.
When purchasing our property 6 years ago, the only Real Estate
disclosure given to us was that our property was in Lava Zone 1.
There was no mention of a threat or potential health hazard due to
the proximity to the PGV.
Rick and I moved here with my 80 year old mother and none of us
have had health problems that we could attribute to the plant, and
there is no scientific or medical information which supports the
creation of a one mile buffer. Creating a health and safety buffer
radius of one mile is unjustified, and creates issues for people like
our family who have chosen to live and work in this radius,
including concerns about property values.
This bill will create additional cost for the county in many areas.
The health studies and monitors can be purchased with Asset Fund
money without taking from community benefits, under the code
and rules which already existed, before Bill 256 and 257.
Until these hearings were held and the manner in which they were
held, people did not complain about PGV, and politics and
misinformation has created an unwarranted concern.
Please do not undo what we have built, drive tourism down, and
cause our beautiful subdivision to be devalued. Thank you for your
consideration.
