Your Committee on Public Works and Pazks, to which was referred Communication No. 514,
reports as follows:
Communication No. 514 is a sign variance request from Chris Tamm, owner of Bay Lighting and
Design, dated October 14, 1999. Mr. Tamm informs the Council that he has been in business since
1984 and is currently constructing a new building at 76 Kalanianaole St. His new place of business
is on property zoned "Resort." Mr. Tamm would like the Council to grant him a variance allowing
him to comply with the sign regulations governing commercially zoned property. The
Communication included diagrams of the signs to be utilized and where they would appeaz on the
new building if the variance were approved.
Mr. Tamm was present at the Committee meeting. He described his desire to increase the size of his
signs beyond that allowed for Resort zoned property so that the signs would be more aesthetically
pleasing and appropriate for the commercial use he is allowed. The Committee felt that the area
surrounding the new building is almost exclusively used for commercial use and that a variance
allowing compliance with commercial standards was appropriate.
Your Committee recommends the variance requested by Chris A. Tamm, allowing him to comply
with the sign regulations governing commercially zoned property instead of resort zoned property,
be approved.
