Relative to Chickens in the City
The proposed legislation, in my humble opinion, is another
manifestation of
"big government" regulating something that does not need
regulation.
Howver, once those in charge of We The People get an idea in
their heads they
rarely let go of it. In light of this, some of the proposed "rules"
are
unreasonable such as:
1) Four is too small a number mostly because when one
purchases hens (the only
place available is at Del's Farm Supply) the minimum purchase
is for SIX baby C?

chicks (one purchases them when they are a few days old and only in
the spring
months).
2) One does not need a rooster to have the hens produce eggs (the
roosters are
obviously the noisy ones). --you need a rooster when you want to
have baby
chickens!
3) Hens do not produce one egg regularly every day. I have ten hens
and get
between four and 7 eggs daily, some days only one egg from the ten
hens.
4) Hens do not need to be caged at all time. In fact, better the rule
state that
they cannot run loose "in a neihborhood" but be confined inside a
fence that is
at least five feet tall. (chickens rarely fly--they only do so when
frightened).
Chickens are best when allowed to scratch and dig in the yard as they
eat coqui
frogs and the eggs as well as cockroaches, worms, lizards and
centipedes. (In fact,
if the State of Hawaii had provided homeowners with a few chickens
who would care
for them, the coqui frog problem would probably be non-existent).
5) The main reason to have a chicken coop is for the hens to sleep in
it all
night and is for protection for them from predators: rats, mongooses,
roaming
cats.

I hope the above information will be perused seriously and help the
powers that
be to allow small-time chicken owners to exist happily in their
neighborhoods.
