We give our thanks of appreciation to you council persons for
allowing us this time.
We are J.C. and Ellen Johnson and we reside on Mill Road in
Silverton Camp
Why are we here at this meeting?
Most of us are concerned about what is happening or may be
going to happen in our Silverton Community and how it will
affect the lives of our youth to senior citizens today and into the
future. Some of us were born and raised and lived all of our
lives here where for me and my family, we moved to Hawaii in
1972 and we have been residents of the Silverton Community
since 1982 after we purchased the home we now live in and is
now owned by our daughter, Margaret, for the past eight years
after buying the house from us. She used to live with us but
now Ellen and I live with Margaret.
During our thirty years in Silverton, we have witnessed
residents pass on or move away and new people move into the
community. During this period of time, we have seen this
community come together on several occasions and make
decisions which they feel was or maybe best for the life of this
community. During these thirty years we have also seen many
people walking to and from the beach. A number of them were
carrying surf or body boards and some were wearing
swimming gear.
The ocean and the beach are two items of great importance to
especially the local people. They are a premium to the citizens
of this island. There are not that many available beaches where
people can go to relax, swim, and surf. Surfing is very _

important.to our young as well as some older peppilf.ollen and
I are in our 80's and freedom in going? bL the beaelf or surfing is
still important to us today. Even though we are unable to go as
often today as in the past, we feel others should not be denied
this freedom to go to the beach to relax, swim, or surf when it
is convenient for them.
When we moved to Hawaii in 1972 from southeast Kansas, we
told our family then that nobody invited us.to move here to .. ,
live. We moved here by Personal choice so our family would be
exposed to other cultures and the life style here. We(would not
expect the citizens here to learn to live the way we hadlived in
Kansas, It would be our responsibility to learn to live as they,
live in Hawaii. If we could not make this adjustment_then we
should go back to Kansas where we came from. We still feel
the same today, forty years later.
Our question is,why did Jim and Charlene purchase the old;
mill sight and ground and land area around and in the gulch?
Jim and Charlene have built a house right in the immediate
area of the _old.mill. This is the residence where they stay.when
in Hawaii. Their mailing address is in Canada. Is Canada their
home, or is Hawaii their home? It is our feeling that one cannot
have it both ways. 'They did make improvements to the path
for access to the beach,with control atbtheir discretion. The
community has no say in the matter.
This is why we are seeking help from the county to settle this
matter and less than an acre of land in the area of the present
trail for a beach access can do it. Is the control of this beach
area by two people,more important than the freedom of access
for the community?

matter.
