To the County Council and Whom it May Concern:
My name is Anayah Doi,and I am eighteen years old. I live on Piihonua Road, and I urge the
council to pass the bill creating a lower speed limit on our street.
At present,the people of our neighborhood are greatly concerned about the speed limit. The
current speed limit is 35 mph in the two-lane area,and changes to 15 mph when the road narrows to
one lane. I drive almost every day,and it is difficult to slow down so quickly. Many drivers ignore the
sign and continue driving at 35 mph. My six younger brothers and sisters play outside often, and
drivers going at 35 mph on a winding one-lane road have difficulty seeing them in time to react.
To make it even worse,my littlest sister is partially deaf and needs to wear hearing aids. I have
witnessed several times when drivers had to either slam their brakes or swerve around her because she
was riding her bike and could not hear the car coming. Our neighbor below us also has two young
children,and several small dogs. She tries to keep the dogs in her yard, but sometimes they find a way
out of the fence and run in the street. Her little girl saw their first puppy get run over before they moved
to their present home,and I am sure she never wants her child to experience this again.
Cars speed even faster at night—I would estimate 45 mph or above.Also,on weekend nights,
we sometimes hear what sounds like drag racing on the 35 mph area. In the morning,we find skid
marks and donut marks on the road. Speed bumps would completely end these problems,but we must
have a lower speed limit before we can have speed bumps.
I understand that speeding drivers is out of your control,but changing the speed limit would
remind them to slow down,and speed bumps would force them to slow down.You can't make every
driver stop speeding,but it is in your power to force them to slow down a lowered speed limit first,
and then speed bumps if possible.I urge you to lower the danger in our neighborhood.There is too
much at stake in Piihonua. We don't want to gamble with our children's safety anymore. •
