RE: Requesting Speed Limit Reduction on Upper Waianuenue Avenue/Pi'ihonua Road
Dear Council Members,
My name is Jennifer Doi, and my family and I are here to ask you to please consider reducing the speed
limit from 35 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour on Upper Waianuenue Ave. from Mana'olana Place to
the Speed Limit 15 sign on Pi'ihonua Road.
My husband's grandfather came from Japan to Hilo to work on the sugar plantation and raised a large
family in Pi'ihonua. My husband and I moved to Pi'ihonua 17 years ago and have raised our seven
children here.
As you can imagine,there have been many changes in Pi'ihonua over the years. One change we have
been very grateful for is the improvement of Pi'ihonua Road. It has been widened and repaved.
Unfortunately,this improvement to the road has been the cause of some anxious moments for my
family. People now drive very fast on this road. We have lost tourists driving while looking at a map
instead of watching the road,young folks talking on the phone while driving and elderly folks whose
reaction time isn't quite what it used to be.
While I have taught my children to never go on the road without supervision,to always make eye
contact with drivers and move off the road when they see a vehicle coming, children do not always
remember what we tell them.To compound the problem, my eight year-old daughter was born hearing-
impaired.Then I, also, became hearing impaired in 2006. We have had some close calls walking on our
road because by the time we hear a car coming, it's sometimes too late to get off the road.
We feel that reducing the speed limit from 35 to 25 miles per hour will make Pi'ihonua Road a safer
place to drive and walk.
