American Nigh Schooiers Request Marx 101
High school kids at Central High, in the sleepy little town of Bourgeoisie, Hawaii shocked the faculty of the high school's history department this
past weekend.The students of the local high school's history club issued a formal request that the study of Karl Marx be included as an option in
fulfilling the school's graduation requirements in the humanities.
The History Club, as it is formally known, is composed of a small group of savvy youngsters who created a list of"10 Reasons Why Karl Marx
Should Be Studied in High School"and presented it to the school's history department. The request specified that the class be labeled Marx 101 and
that the study be optional but offered for credit in place of or in conjunction with American Economic History 101. The request also specified the
new offering be made available in the fall of the coming 2013-14 academic year!
The request has created quite a stir amongst students,teachers,parents, and, especially the local Chamber of Commerce. Several Chamber board
members are parents of students who brain-stormed the request as members of Central High's,The History Club. The irony has been noted by
several of the community's spokes-persons who are outraged by the mere suggestion that Karl Marx be given any consideration as a serious study
in the American high school curriculum. "Are we raising a community of subversive revolutionaries here or just what?"one parent is quoted as
exclaiming.Another parent wanted to know who is responsible for putting this madness into the minds of our young people?One Chamber parent
cried out, "It's downright un-American".
The fallout from this one-of-a-kind gesture from American youth is a story in its own right, but we will save that for the tabloid publications sure to
follow. What is more interesting is the stunning substance embodied by the"10 Reasons..."provided in the students'unusual request. Judge for
yourself whether or not these young radical rascals have a case! Freddie Engels, Central H.S. senior, and president of Central's, "The History Club",
provided a copy of the Club's"10 Reasons"re-printed here unabridged for you to make up your own mind.

"Sea life provides half of our oxygen and a lot of our food and regulates climate",per the Census of Marine Life initiative.How does the Navy impact sea life?
Severely,per the draft EIS(Environmental Impact Statement)for Navy actions in waters between Hawai'i and Southern California.
Explosions may kill over 200 marine mammals.Explosions and sonar may cause hearing loss or other harm to over 1,600.Military noise may affect the
behavior of millions.And vessel strikes and military debris may harm sea life.
But the EIS is quick to point out: "...marine mammal and sea turtle mortality and injury from...[non-Navy] causes [bycatch,hunting,entanglement,vessel
strikes,habitat destruction,pollution,climate change] are estimated to be orders of magnitude greater..." For noise,the EIS ticks off non-Navy sources:
"commercial shipping, oil and gas exploration and production activities,commercial and recreational fishing(including noise from sonar and acoustic deterrent
and harassment devices),recreational boating and whale watching activities, offshore power generation,research(including noise from air guns,sonar,and
telemetry)..." I
But what do we know about sea life? Scientific literature only describes about one-quarter of an estimated one million marine species.And estimates of Navy
harm spiked since the last EIS,due to updated research.What will future research reveal?
Earthjustice reports sonar can cause"internal hemorrhaging and ruptured eardrums"in marine mammals,and adds that sonar has"been implicated in mass
strandings of marine mammals in...the Bahamas,Greece,the Canary Islands,and Spain.In 2004... the Navy's sonar was implicated in a mass beaching of up to
200 melon-headed whales in Hanalei Bay[Hawai'i].In 2003,the USS Shoup,operating in Washington's Haro Strait,exposed a group of endangered Southern
Resident killer whales to mid-frequency sonar,causing the animals to stop feeding and attempt to flee..."

artificial sound "can drown out the noises that marine mammals rely on"to"find food,find friends, find a mate, and find their way..."
The EIS estimates sonar could impact marine mammals almost forty miles away. But low-frequency sounds can travel farther—thousands of miles—via the
SOFAR(sound frequency and ranging)temperature/pressure ocean channel.
The EIS says"International Council for the Exploration of the Sea...noted,taken in context of marine mammal populations in general,sonar is not a major
threat,or significant portion of the overall ocean noise budget."But the EIS doesn't report the Council adds: "The full effects of sonar on cetaceans are not well
known... behavioural alteration is more important than the direct effect of the sound on hearing mechanisms. It is unknown how many animals that are affected
further out to sea can survive and not strand. Little is known of the sub-lethal effects of sonar on beaked whales or on other cetacean species."
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute says"human divers can suffer from bubbles-induced decompression sickness,also known as the bends"and notes that
"blood and tissues of some deceased beaked whales stranded near naval sonar exercises are riddled with bubbles..."
But the EIS says"Recent modeling suggests that even unrealistically rapid rates of ascent from normal dive behaviors are unlikely to result in supersaturation to
the extent that bubble formation would be expected in beaked whales ... "
However,the EIS doesn't report the scientists it cited also say"...modeling indicates that repetitive shallow dives,perhaps as a consequence of an extended
avoidance reaction to sonar sound,can indeed pose a risk for DCS..." [decompression sickness]
