'/:• STATE OF HAWAII 7TH 6;.60 RESOLUTION NO. 49 13 A RESOLUTION URGING THE GOVERNOR, THE HAWAII CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION, AND ALL STATE OF HAWAII LEGISLATORS TO ENCOURAGE PRESIDENT OBAMA TO SELECT HAWAII AS THE SITE FOR HIS PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY. WHEREAS, on June 3, 2011, the Council of the City and County of Honolulu unanimously adopted Resolution No. 11-124, which urges President Obama to select a location in Hawai`i as the site for his presidential library; and WHEREAS, the City and County of Honolulu has potential sites for the library and museum on the water front near the airport in the Kaka`ako section, and at the new West Oahu University of Hawai`i campus; and WHEREAS, University of Hawai`i at Manoa faculty members have met with officials from other presidential libraries and are continuing to develop a proposal to house President Obama's presidential library; and WHEREAS, the Obama Presidential Library could be developed to surpass the existing 13 presidential libraries in both size and technological capabilities; and WHEREAS, the library is expected to feature galleries, public experiences, theatrical presentations and more, capturing the leadership, the human drama, the agonizing decisions, the achievements and the legacy of the Obama presidency; and WHEREAS, a presidential library in Hawai`i would provide the people of Hawai`i with access to the documents and artifacts of the Obama administration, which comprise a significant piece of our nation's history; and WHEREAS, Barack Obama, the forty-fourth President of the United States, was born and raised in Hawai`i and continues to maintain an ongoing close relationship with the State; and WHEREAS, locating the library in Hawai`i would provide extraordinary short and long- term economic benefits to the State; and WHEREAS, the University of Chicago, located in the state of Illinois, is also competing for the library; now,therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it strongly urges the Governor and all State of Hawai`i Legislators to encourage President Obama to select Hawai`i as the site for his presidential library. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall forward copies of this resolution to the Honorable President Barack H. Obama, the Honorable United States Senator Mazie K. Hirono, the Honorable United States Senator Brian Schatz, the Honorable United States Representative Colleen Hanabusa, the Honorable United States Representative Tulsi Gabbard, all Senators and Representatives of the Hawai`i State Legislature, the Honorable Governor Neil Abercrombie, the respective Mayors of the Counties of Hawai`i, Kaua`i, Maui, and the City and County of Honolulu, the Kaua`i County Council, the Maui County Council, the City and County of Honolulu Council, and the Chancellor of the University of Hawai`i.
