Your Committee on Public Works and Parks, to which was referred Communication No. 747, and attached
Bill No. 245, reports as follows:
The purpose of Bill No. 245 is to amend the Parks and Recreational Facility Schedule established by
Ordinance No. 00-15, by renaming the Seven Seas Luau House in honor of Sally Kaleohano.
Communication No. 747 is from Council Member Aaron S. Y. Chung, dated April 18, 2000, transmitting
Bill No. 245 for the Council's review and consideration. Mr. Chung requests that the Seven Seas Luau
House be renamed in honor of Sally Kaleohano, pursuant to Chapter 15, Article 8, Section 15-67(b), of the
EIawai`i County Code 1983 (1995 Edition). Mr. Chung states that this proposal came about through the
numerous requests from the community who knew Sally Kaleohano. They felt she deserves recognition for
her sharing of the "Aloha" spirit throughout her years of service with the Department of Parks & Recreation
as well as an individual.
Council Member Bobby Jean Leithead-Todd stated that the renaming of the Seven Seas Luau House will be
consistent with the Edith Kanakaole Multi-purpose Stadium, Walter C. K.Victor Baseball Complex, and the
Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Council Members James Y. Arakaki, Nancy Pisicchio, Dominic Yagong and Bobby Jean Leithead-Todd
expressed concerns that their community members have requested renaming various facilities in their
respective districts. The community members have been discouraged because of a Department of Parks and
Recreation policy not to use people's names for facilities.
Your Committee is in accord with the purpose and intent of Bill No. 245, and recommends that it pass first
reading.
