I, Luella Nohea Crutcher, a resident in the Puna District, .
Support Res. 42-13
Each island is unique, and Home Rule (which Res. 42-13 supports) would support this
uniqueness. Each island needs to be responsible for their own island and not make other islands
take care of their needs.
Such as Oahu taking wind energy from Molokai and Lanai, and Geothermal from our
island -that is being maha'oe, and does not allow Oahu to take care of their own
Kuleana, their own island (It would cost Oahu less money to go Photovoltic Solar
Panels!).
Supporting this Resolution supports Home Rule, and thus supports each island in being
responsible for their own space, their own Kuleana.
Decisions were made 20 +years ago that were not pono, and allowed a geothermal plant.
Money was more important than human beings. A health report (Legator) was shelved and
Department Heads of both State and Hawaii were transferred, because of their concerns for
geothermal causing health and safety problems. Thus Geothermal was forced on the poor
residents that lived next to PGV, and are affected daily. During the blow out, this toxic gas even
went as far as Sea View Estates were people were affected there and in Pahoa. Birds and bees
were found dead in Pahoa.
And now it continues. The"powers that be" still are not listening and allowing drilling to take
place. The idea of drilling close to any residence or recreational areas,just magnifies the
problems. The safety zone should be at least 10 miles from residents, recreational areas, or
even farm land.
Note: Photovoltic Solar Panels are not a health or safety hazard.
Last and the most important issue, drilling into Tutu Pele is definitely not Pono. Think of the
money that would have been saved, plus the time and energy— if there was just respect for the
"old ways". Tutu Pele is giving us feedback (and the"powers that be" turn their deaf ear. She
has not stopped flowing since the first drilling (in the 80's),and with that comes the vog,
that affects everyone on this island, and is also felt on the other islands.
I hope this County Council Team is pono, and put peoples health and safety before money. You
don't have to believe in Tutu Pele but this is Hawaii, and this is her home, her kuleana and
that needs to be respected. You don't have to believe in her, but just respect the "old
ways".
