My name is Jesse Branco. I am 23 years old. I came to Papaikou at the age of 3. I lived at the
first left past Pinky's. My brother and I spent most of our free time at Papaikou beach. I love that
place. I learned to surf there, and witnessed some of the best surfing talent we have on the island.
Words can't explain! I still surf there today. I got some of my best barrels there. I love the beach
just like it is. I don't want it to change. I want the youth to enjoy it like I did.
I know Charlene, and we are close friends. We met in a strange way. I was one of four young
men who jumped over the gate one year on the annual closing day. Charlene was standing right
there asking us to respect the rules. We didn't. We were served a Notice of Trespass by the
police. Then when one of my friends escaped, and the police turned it into an arrest.
As I went through the court system, I got to know Charlene. We often talk about how we first met
and how our relationship has changed. There are not many people who meet in that kind of
situation and end up being close friends. I am the leader of the Papaikou Surf Team that will be
taking the responsibility of opening and closing the gate during extended summer hours. I am
ready to commit to make this management team work. Charlene knows that I have her back.
I LOVE surfing and I want to teach the youth to surf so they can enjoy the ocean and outdoors.
Words cannot explain the thrill I get from surfing. I can have one bad day, and after I surf, I feel
prime. My body just feels so good and loose.
I am like an older brother to a young family friend. I take him to Papaikou beach and teach him
about surfing and about life. I want him to grow up strong and whole. I believe that surfing
brings us balance and peace of mind. That's what I want for myself and that's what I want for my
young friend.
