Re: Comm. No. 189
Your Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit, to which was referred Communication
No. 189, reports as follows:
Communication No. 189, transmitted by Mayor William P. Kenoi, dated March 6, 2013,
nominates Mr. John M. Bertsch of Council District 8 to the County of Hawai`i Police
Commission.
Mr. Bertsch, a 21 -year resident of Hawai`i, is self - employed as a consultant in construction
management. He is a Volunteer Fire Captain with the Hawai`i Fire Department, and is the
Director of Public Safety Emergency Management for the Ironman Triathlon. Mr. Bertsch
previously served on the Police and Fire Commissions, and states that he is not affiliated with
any political party. If confirmed, he will serve the remainder of the term that ends on
December 31, 2015, and will be replacing Mr. Paul Horner.
Committee Chair Ford specified that Mr. Bertsch does not need to appear before the full Council
for confirmation.
Your Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Communication No. 189, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of Mr. John M.
Bertsch to the County of Hawaii Police Commission.
