Mr. Au is a lifelong resident of Hawaii. He is a carpenter, presently employed by the Hawai'i Carpenter's Union. Mr. Au was recently nominated with a favorable recommendation to the County of Hawaii Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Commission. He submitted a resignation letter to PONC on March 28, 2013. The reason for this is Mr. Au had previously expressed an interest in serving on the Board of Appeals after his term on the Planning Commission was complete. We have found that members of the Board of Appeals with a working knowledge of planning matters are very effective, and encourage them to transition from the Planning Commission to the Board of Appeals when possible. There were no vacancies on the Board of Appeals when Mr. Au was nominated to serve on the PONC. We are pleased that circumstances have resulted in an immediate vacancy on the Board of Appeals where the County will benefit from Mr. Au's experience and willingness to serve. Mr. Au is a member of the St. Joseph School Board, and is the Hilo Apprenticeship Coordinator for the Carpenter's Union. He volunteers as a youth basketball and track and field coach. Mr. Au states that he is not affiliated with any political party. If confirmed, he will serve a term that expires on December 31, 2017, replacing Karen Maedo whose term expired on December 31, 2012. I would like to respectfully request this nomination be waived out of committee to fill this vacancy as soon as possible.
