I am writing in support of two line items of the OP/CIP Budget-
Line Item 25--Mahukona Beach Park Renovation
The current pavilion is in great need of repair. Volunteers from the community have
made repairs to the restrooms and the mainfloor, painted it, and put in new stairs in
collaboration with the county Parks and Rec. Making extensive repairs may not be the
way to go however, we will take whatever we can get as the community has the
manpower, expertise and drive to do the repairs. A new pavilion may be best. In
addition, a permanent restroom facility nearer to the wharf where people congegrate
can be part of the funds. Finally, providing electricity at the Kapaa pavilion would be
tremendous boost for the community.
Line Item 31--N. Kohala Recreational Facilities Repair & Upgrades
The Kamehameha Park grandstand has not been used since the 2006 earthquake,
being 'condemned' by county public works. The Kohala National Guard Alumni
volunteered to gut the inside ceilings and walls so that a better inspection could be
made by a structural engineer. An architect from the community volunteered to look at
the structure and sees repairs in certain areas could make the building useable again.
Other contractor volunteers are ready to work by putting new stairs, replacing the old
ones.
Kamehameha Park has two more 'projects' in standby--a small pavilion at the
Gateball field adjacent to Veterans Field and a roof for the bandstand area in front of
Hisaoka gym. These are small projects that could be built by the community if the
materials are available.
In closing, I'd like to say the Kohala Community is a 'can do' district and will help in
whichever way necessary.
