HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 112 Draft 01 2012-2014 „,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAI I +r,Tt OF■•••44 RESOLUTION NO. 112 13 A RESOLUTION URGING THE DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION AND PATH (PEOPLES ADVOCACY FOR TRAILS HAWAI`I)TO RENAME THE OLD WALUA ROAD BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN SCENIC ROUTE TO THE "TONI FORTIN BLAIR MEMORIAL OLD WALUA ROAD BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN SCENIC ROUTE.” WHEREAS, the late Toni Fortin Blair was a resident of Kailua-Kona for more than 30 years; and WHEREAS, Toni Fortin Blair was a dedicated community volunteer, a founding member, and a tireless supporter of PATH (Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawai`i), who led the effort to establish the Old Walua Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Scenic Route; and WHEREAS, the nearly four-mile long Old Walua Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Scenic Route is a linear shared-use pathway in Kailua-Kona and the only one of its kind in the Kona area; and WHEREAS, Toni Fortin Blair's leadership enabled hundreds of Kailua-Kona families and individuals to enjoy the pathway for walking, bicycling, and running; and WHEREAS, Toni Fortin Blair's unwavering dedication to making Kona a safe and healthy place to live, established a legacy that lives on through the many volunteers who continue her pioneering efforts on behalf of PATH; and WHEREAS, PATH and the County of Hawai`i, through the Department of Parks and Recreation, entered into an agreement on June 23, 1995, to combine efforts and resources to develop the former Walua Road for recreational use by pedestrians and bicyclists; and WHEREAS, on February 28, 2013, PATH signed a Friend of the Park Program Agreement of Services for Old Walua Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Scenic Route to organize quarterly "Kokua Walua" cleanup events, purchase and install pet-waste dispensers, and purchase and install signage on existing poles; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the Department of Parks and Recreation and PATH are urged to rename the Old Walua Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Scenic Route in honor of Toni Fortin Blair. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this resolution to the Honorable Mayor William P. Kenoi, the Director and Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation, and PATH.
