Goals: To provide the County of Hawai'i with enhanced interoperable communications
with respect to voice, data, and/or video signals; and the opportunity to achieve meaningful and
measurable improvements to the state of public safety communications interoperability.
Objectives: This project allowed installation of a new interoperable radio channel to provide
communications between county agencies as well as state and federal partners, provided ROIP
gateways, and use of the full capacity of the county's microwave ring.
Outcomes or Results: Hawai'i County has gained the ability to effect incident wide communications at
the command level without negatively impacting regular Public Safety Communications, the ability for

Hawai'i County is an equal opportunity provider and employer
Civil Defense Emergency Operations Center to monitor and communicate directly with incident
command posts in the field, and the expansion of the County IP/Data network to 15 additional nodes
The project purchased and installed 8 new radio repeaters at remote radio sites to provide an
interoperable channel usable by all public safety agencies in Hawai'i County, 11 new dispatch consoles
that provide Radio over IP gateway capabilities, and Multiple Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)
equipment to manage data traffic over the county's microwave ring.
