The amendment of this Section addresses fare increases and changes to the fare structure of Hawai`i County's public transit system. This amendment takes effect on July 1, 2013. Mass Transit requests that this bill be waived from the Finance Committee in order for the changes to take effect on July 1, 2013. REQUEST: To amend Chapter 18, Article 4, of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended), relating to Public Transit System, Island-Wide Fare Structure. B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): The amendment of this article will increase bus fares to a $2.00 cash fare for riders of the Hele-On bus system. Senior citizens (age 60 and above), individuals with disabilities, and students will be charged a $1.00 cash fare. Children under the age of five will continue to ride free of charge. For all riders, a discount will be provided on a fare pre-payment program utilizing bus passes or bus tickets. In addition, we are requesting to have this bill go directly to the next Council meeting dated June 5, 2013, and waive Committee. This will allow the amendment to be in effect July 1, 2013.
