Dear Chairman Domingo and Committee Members:
Good morning. My name is Fred Galdones and I am the Division Director of the ILWU
Local 142, Hawaii Division here on the Big Island. I am here this morning to request
your support for the Oceanside 1250 project which you are considering today.
Hawaii County has the highest unemployment rate in the State of Hawaii. Even those
workers with jobs are struggling to make ends meet. It is during these difficult
times that we must support and encourage projects which will provide jobs for the
workers of the County. We need to provide these people with a chance to earn a decent
living.
The development of the Oceanside 1250 project will provide such jobs and opportunities
for our residents-.-- In--addition, the project will provide its.-fair- share of infrastruc-
ture and community facilities, including a 140 acre ocean park and the construction of
a new highway serving the south Kona area. These are the kinds of projects we need
to support and encourage here in the County.
We need to sustain and strengthen our economy through the approval of responsible
developments. I am therefore urging you to not delay action on this project.
Thank you for allowing us this time to express our views.
