co Re: Bill 85 —Relating to Vehicle Registration Fees and Weight Tax
On May 16, 2013 we transmitted Communication 289, submitting a bill for an ordinance to set the
County of Hawai`i's vehicle registration fees at $12, to increase motor vehicle weight taxes by a
half cent, and to set minimum weight tax at $12. These fees and taxes have not been increased since
2002 and 2004, respectively.
Revenue from these fee and tax adjustments was instrumental in achieving a balanced operating
budget for FY 2013-14. That budget strategically invests in the service improvements our
community has been demanding. In the area of transportation, that includes keeping our island
roadways in better condition and improving the operations of the Vehicle Registration and
Licensing Division.
Attached to this communication is a summary of relevant information showing current and
proposed Hawaii County fees and weight tax, along with comparative rates for other counties. As
shown in that summary, our proposed fees and tax rates are at or below the lowest rates in the state.
