Subject: Hilo Skate Park Testimony
Aloha County of Hawaii,
My name is Kale Ka'aikala and I'm from the island of Maui. I have been skating for 12 years and I own
a small brand named Moke Life that is heavily inspired and influenced by skateboarding and Hawaii
culture. Here on Maui, since the construction of the Lahaina Skate Park and the Hana Skate Park, we've
seen a huge increase in skate tourism from the outer islands, mainland, and from professionals within the
industry such as Thrasher Magazine and Volcom. Not only that, the impact the skate park has had on the
Hana community has been tremendous, there's always kids using it as it's not raining and it's gives kids
someplace to go and be active, as opposed to sitting in front of a tv playing mind melting video games or
drinking and doing drugs. Skateboarding is a creative and physical outlet thats accessible to all ages. I
visit Hawai'i Island often, and the one thing I'm amazed at is that people from Hilo need to travel 30-40
minutes out side of Hilo to have a legal place to skate. Giving the people a skate park in Hilo will
increase give kids and adults a positive, physical outlet, promote creativity, and increase tourism and
exposure for the Island. Mahalo Nui Loa for your time.
