Subject: In support of Bill 39 draft 3
Aloha Council Members,
My name is Jay Ihara, resident of Puna, and I'm representing myself. I'm writing in support of Bill
39 draft 3.
I want to thank Council Member Onishi for appropriating funding to Parks and Recreation towards the
Hilo Skate Plaza.
Programs like the Big Island Babes Junior Derby and Paradise Roller Girls are growing. The Skate Plaza
will give these programs a venue to practice and play.
The Junior Derby program is a good alternative to youth sports such as volleyball, softball, and
basketball. One Junior Derby participant had bad experience with volleyball and felt like she did not
belong with the group. With Junior Derby she found acceptance, a sense of belonging, teamwork, and
friends. Without Derby, this young lady might find her high school years to be filled with isolation.
I humbly ask the County Council to support funding for the Hilo Skate Plaza in Bill 39 draft 3. Thank
you.
