Subject: raising revenue
To The County Council,
This may sound like a crazy idea but I think that we can raise revenue
by creating resale stores at all trash dumping sights on The Big
Island. They are starting to do this already in several locations. I
would like the county to do some advertizing to create awareness. I
see some of the treasures that people throw away on a regular basis.
If the county does a little advertizing to create awareness on this issue
and ask the county residents to start donate their unwanted treasure to
help the Big Island create these resale stores at dump sites it could
become a great success. Folks buy other peoples junk and sell
antiques. We put it to the test At Waikoloa Elementary School
several years ago. I was part of the PTA and we were trying to raise
money for a marquee sign in the front of the school. Since it was my
idea they put me in charge. I had to gather support from the
community, hotels and residents to donate unwanted items and in 7
hours we raise $6,000.00. We had to leave at 4:00pm because the
church had their service that evening at 5:00pm. We had to quickly
call the homeless shelter that afternoon to come pick up the rest of
the items that we didn't have time to sell. The last hour we sold our
donations for a $ 1 .00 a pound. The community had a great time
putting on this event. Mr. Art Souza, the school principal at that time
was very excited and surprised by the success of this event.
