Dear Chairman Yoshimoto and Council Members:
It is my pleasure to inform you that I have nominated Mr. Joel J. Cohen to the South Kohala
Community Development Plan (CDP) Action Committee, for a four-year term. Mr. Cohen is a 12-
year resident of Hawai'i Island who has lived in Waimea for the past five years.
Mr. Cohen is presently retired. His past work experience in California is with Human Resources,
Personnel, Parks and Recreation, and Youth Services. He is a former member of the Hawaii
County Merit Appeals Board, and past president and a current board member of the Hamakua
Youth Foundation. Mr. Cohen was the Interim Executive Director of the Hamakua Youth Center in
2010, past chair of the YWCA Hamakua Youth Center Advisory Committee, and past vice-chair of
the Hamakua Power of Choice. He is also a former team member of the North Hawaii Drug Free
Coalition.
Mr. Cohen's previous work experience and his extensive involvement with community
organizations will provide an excellent viewpoint into the Action Committee meetings and
discussions.
