RE: Support for the Creation of a Real Property Tax Task Force
Aloha Chair Yoshimoto and members of the Council,
The Kohala Coast Resort Association (KCRA) supports the Hawaii County Council's creation of a real
property tax stakeholder task force to address recommendations contained in the Internal Association of
Assessing Officers Report, completed in 2012.
The resort association is a private, non-profit organization, founded in 1984 for the purpose of promoting
and maintaining a standard of quality development for the Kohala Coast on the Island of I Iawais i. Its members
include: Hualalai Resort, Mauna Kea Resort, Mauna Lani Resort, Waikoloa Beach Resort, Four Seasons Resort
Hualalai, Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, Hilton Waikoloa Village, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Mauna Lani Bay
Hotel & Bungalows, The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii and the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.
Each of the destination's four resorts is a master planned resort community which includes residential
neighborhoods, hotels, golf' courses and retail operations. In 2010, the properties on the Kohala Coast
collectively generated around $35.7 million in total real property tax revenues.
KCRA member hotels and resorts represent more than 60 percent of the island's hotel rooms and vacation
rentals. They also directly employ nearly 5,000 island residents — more than 8% of the entire island's non-farm
workforce - with a resulting annual payroll of close to $156 million.
The resort association requests it be included in the conversation as the real property task force moves
forward.
