Council Members:
Bill 79 sends a sad message to the world that the island is closing its boarders to science and technology.
After 30 years of bioterrorism there is no evidence that GMO based crops represent a threat to human
health or the environment. This bill will severely handicap agriculture in Hawaii County and open the
County to civil litigation. It took 30 years to find a solution to the papaya ringspot virus. Investment in
research may be necessary to fight the banana bunchy top virus or coffee berry beetle or any other
infestation that could invade the island.
Passing legislation that is based on myth and fallacy and which fails to acknowledge scientific evidence
will shut down future investment in finding solutions to some of Hawaii's most serious agricultural—and
real environmental challenges. The Council should promote, not destroy local agriculture. This bill will
eliminate the Hawaii County papaya industry and severely hamper ranching.
